Takeaway coffee cups can release thousands of microplastic particles into hot drinks, especially if they are made of plastic or have a plastic lining. Microplastics are tiny fragments, from dust-sized to a sesame seed, that can end up in the environment, our food, and our bodies.
Scientists are still studying the long-term health effects, but research suggests that drinking 300 ml of coffee daily from a polyethylene cup could lead to ingesting about 363,000 microplastic particles each year.

Using reusable cups made of stainless steel, ceramic, or glass is the best option. If disposable cups are necessary, plastic-lined paper cups generally shed fewer microplastics than fully plastic ones, though neither is completely microplastic-free.
