Microplastics in the Don River & Lake Ontario

A recent study - Toronto’s Don River sends 500 billion microplastics into Lake Ontario each year.

Major sources include construction foam, tire wear, and plastic pellets, while larger debris such as plastic bags and wet wipes make up about 20% each of visible litter.

Researchers also link the pollution partly to Toronto’s aging sewer system, which overflows during heavy rain and flushes untreated waste, including wet wipes, into the river. The city is investing $3 billion to upgrade the system and curb sewage overflows.

A simple way we can stop microplastics going into our waterways. STOP throwing PLASTIC GARGAGE into our waterways.
