Canada's Whale Sanctuary

Canada’s Whale Sanctuary Offers Former Captive Whales a Place to Heal

Canada is on the verge of providing formerly captive whales with a life far closer to what they were denied. The country’s first natural-sea sanctuary for retired whales—including belugas once held at Marineland of Canada—is taking shape along Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore. Known as Canada’s Whale Sanctuary, the project will transform a sheltered inlet into a permanent seaside refuge, allowing whales retired from aquariums to live in an ocean environment rather than concrete tanks.

If successful, the sanctuary would rank among the world’s first fully operational ocean-based refuges for cetaceans and could serve as a global model for countries seeking more ethical futures for aging marine park animals.
